Miraculous Plane Landing
Discovery Channel has a range of interesting shows and they often make for very good viewing. (Man vs Wild rocks!). But i caught another good one last Thursday night - 'Secrets of Survival'.
This particular episode detailed the story of 'Andy Judy', a skydiver who got trapped in air, upside down, when one of his feet got stuck on the plane's wing. He was up in the air for 40 minutes, at 10,500 ft, weathering wind speeds of 100 mph. He survived with only minor bruises. But how did he get out of this situation?
Heartbreak
She lost. The sports lover and the Indian in me is really disappointed.
18 year old Saina Nehwal, playing in her first Olympics, lost in the quarter finals today morning to Indonesian Maria Kristin Yulianti. The scoreline read 28-26, 14-21, 15-21. I managed to catch the final two sets live on TV, and was extremely happy when she was leading 11-3 in the final set. Then a change of court, a quick word from the coach P Gopichand (Winner of 2001 All England Open Badminton Championship), but somehow the momentum shifted. May be she got a bit flustered losing a few consecutive points on unforced errors, may be the pressure got to her ...
(Alternate) Career Choices
Can you imagine someone giving up a plush software development job and become a courier person who rides a bicycle? Frankly, even I didn’t think it was possible, until I read this post.
You are not dispensable
This is the message sent out by the State of Israel to all its soldiers and citizens.
Israel recently exchanged 5 Lebanese prisoners and bodies of 200 militants for getting back two dead Israeli soldiers who were abducted in July 2006 by Hezbollah.
The Disadvantages of Elite Education
William Deresiewicz taught at Yale University for 10 years and has written this excellent article presenting his view on some of the disadvantages of elite education. (The excerpts from this article are highlighted in bold in this post.)
Plane Hacker
Wow! Take a bow for Mark Langford. He has spent over 12 years building his own air plane (KR2S derivative), and has logged 625 hours of flying time on it.
Making of Classic Rock Albums
If you like listening to rock, chances are you would like at least some part of the recently started Season-2 of "History Rocks" on the History Channel. It is a 17-part special series on some of the classic and all time best rock music. It features interviews with the key people, behind the scenes and the making of the cult albums.
Personality types
Often, it is great fun playing with those psychometric questionnaires that keep popping up in colorful tabloid style newspaper city supplements. The fun is not to really know how good (or what kind of) a lover/friend/pet-owner etc you are. but rather trying to fore guess the intention of the question and answering accordingly. (You know i was not good with college exam marks, so at least should get high scores somewhere.)
Forgive, Forget and Move On
The ability to put down insights and wisdom into simple words is hard. Of course this mandates having a clear thinking mind as a prerequisite, but still the art of writing clearly is a gift for a few only.
I read some very simple thought provoking lines recently. The source was quite unexpected i must admit. Here is a small excerpt from Jed Rubenfeld's The Interpretation of Murder.
Managers and Sense of Humor
I was recounting my previous experiences at other work places with a colleague at my current office.
It made me realize that for some reason, I manage to rub off a few (not all) people in the management chain in a wrong sort of way. I am not sure why it happens, as I am a very amiable kind of person if one agrees with me.
One of my erstwhile very good friend thought I had a decent sense of humor. I naively believed it, and used it a couple of times with a few in the management hierarchy.
